I’ve got some questions for you. (poolrules.org)

Appropriation is a sticky issue. It is often negatively viewed as stealing, copying, or laziness. And yet, plenty of artists and designers (myself included) continue to use it as a mode of creation. Much of my thesis so far has been about defining working strategies for myself, that will allow me to create meaningful work from pre-existing elements, and avoid the unpleasant trappings of appropriation.
To inform my own developing working methods, I’m curious what personal guidelines other creative people follow when appropriating photography, typographic elements, and styles. I recently asked some fellow designers the question, “do you have any advice, suggestions, or working methods for me, as I begin working with collected materials?” and the responses I got were both insightful and helpful. Among them, Martin Venezky advised “never use things ‘wholesale’, that is, as a complete image if (you) can help it” and Isaac Gertman suggested “Don’t worry too much about your references as long as they make sense.”
